Top Tips- hire or buy?
Will I wear this hat again? Where will I store it? Can I afford it? If you have to ask yourself any of these questions then hiring a hat, as opposed to buying, is probably the best option for you. Whatever the case here are some important tips to ensure the correct choice of hat for you:
1) Always take along your outfit to ensure the perfect match.
2) Avoid wearing the same colour throughout. If your outfit is plain accessorise with colours and/or pattern, and vice-versa.
3) Try to view your hat in daylight, as artificial light can be deceptive.
4) Take along a friend or relative for that all-important second opinion.
5) Never wear a hat on the back of your head; tilt it, pull it low over the brow or wear it straight.
6) Never wear a hat with a brim wider than your shoulders, (unless you're a 6ft tall Andi McDowell look-alike), and never wear a hat narrower than your hair-do.
7) Never hire/buy a hat that you're not completely happy with. A small hat can be just as much a statement as a large hat, it's much more important to feel comfortable, so don't be bullied into a purchase.
8) The label, or seam, always sits at the back of the head, in line with your spine.
9) Make sure the hat sits comfortably on your head, use milliner's tape if necessary.
10) To add height go for a high crown and/or an upturned brim, try to avoid a down brim or a veil.
There are always exceptions to the rule so these tips are designed as a guideline only, but the key is to try on as many different styles, sizes and colours as possible to find your ideal hat. Most importantly hat buying should be a pleasure so take your time and have fun.
When hiring from Encore Hats a refundable security deposit is taken at the time of booking and the hire fee is then taken at the time of collection. Our hire rates are for a period of six days, however, extended periods can be arranged for an additional fee. All our hats are supplied well packaged in a sturdy hat box.
